Pakistani and Muslim weddings in the UAE are not one event. They are usually three, and the catering brief for each is genuinely different. Treating them as one large booking is the most common way couples end up over-catering the smallest and under-catering the largest.
Nikah: smaller, and often the same day
The nikah itself is the contract. Guest lists are typically closer family and witnesses, often 30 to 80 people, and the meal afterwards is frequently a lunch rather than a dinner.
At this size the AED 45 vegetarian or AED 65 classic package is usually right. Fifty guests on the classic is AED 3,250; eighty is AED 5,200. Note that 30 guests on anything below the premium package falls under the AED 3,000 outdoor minimum, so very small events are better booked inside the restaurant.
Walima: larger, and the one people remember
The walima is the reception hosted by the groom's family, and it is where the guest list expands: extended family, colleagues, community. Two hundred to four hundred is common in the UAE, and this is the event where the food is judged.
Two hundred guests on the AED 85 zouq package is AED 17,000, and on the AED 110 premium, which includes a whole mutton dam pukht ouzi served on rice, it is AED 22,000. On the AED 65 classic it is AED 13,000.
Mehndi: informal, and the easiest to overspend on
The mehndi is the least formal of the three and generally the one where a lighter package works perfectly well. It is also, for that reason, where a live counter earns most: a live jalebi or live puri counter suits the atmosphere far better than an extra course would.
Live BBQ, live tandoor and live jalebi counters are AED 10 per person. A live puri counter is AED 15.
How to split a wedding budget across the three
If the total is fixed, weight it toward the walima. The nikah is a family meal and the mehndi is a party; the walima is the one every guest attends and remembers. Putting the premium package on the walima and the classic on the other two is a better use of the same money than spreading a mid package evenly.
Timing and terms
Book six to eight weeks out, and longer if the date falls in peak season. Final guest numbers are due three days before each event, which is also when the remaining 50 percent falls due; 50 percent is taken on booking. If fewer guests attend the bill stands at the number booked, and if more attend it is adjusted upward.
